The annual Big Tex Choice Awards — where we find out who made the best State Fair fried foods — is always a fun gig. This year, I tried to do a little something fun myself, and decided to play around a little with some animated GIFs. I actually did something similar during the Dallas Cowboys home opener a couple of years ago. You can see that link here. As I said in that article, the whole thing is an homage to a photographer I deeply admire, Trent Nelson.
Trent, who works at the Salt Lake City Tribune, is like a zen master when it comes to making GIFs while on assignment. His “Friday GIFs” series, which he posts on his blog, is a must read for not only myself, but a lot of friends and colleagues of mine in the business. You can see his work here.
On a technical note, for those wondering, these were all shot on Canon 1D-X cameras. I normally only shoot those when covering sports, preferring the smaller, lighter Canon 5D MkIII; I like that it’s a quieter camera, too. But for these GIF’s, I thought it better to go with the X, which can shoot a lot more frames per second. Lastly, I used a site called GIFMaker.me, which works really well.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
